Blenheim Palace – Duke of Marlborough Coat of Arms

I have currently been working on a project based on the Blenheim Palace coat of arms. This has been planned for some time and I have finally begun the initial research for this project. These two very large depictions of the Duke of Marlborough’s Coat of Arms dominates the flagstaff gates. The two identical crests which are lavishly covered in a gold gilt, stand proud against the stark black 17 ton gates. It was my aim to reproduce a detailed replica model of this beautiful design on a somewhat smaller scale! In order to achieve maximum detail and a high level of accuracy, it was important to visit the palace to take a closer look. During my visit I collected a number of sketches and photographs, these early studies were then taken back to the studio and developed further. A series of line and tonal drawings were soon developed using a mix of free hand drawing and computer aided design. The prepared designs were then ready for the plaster model making process.
